When buying a diamond, prioritize what you can see first to determine where to spend your money. Three options are available: super high quality (F+ VVS2), balancing size and quality (H+ vs2+), and maximizing size at the cost of quality (K+ si2+). The best option is to balance size and quality for a stunning diamond that will last.
The cut is crucial in achieving maximum sparkle and brilliance in a diamond. A well-cut diamond reflects light optimally and creates a dazzling sparkle that can be seen from a distance as well. To get the best sparkle, look for a diamond with an excellent cut, excellent symmetry, excellent polish (Triple EX) or at least a “Very Good” cut.
To appreciate the color of a diamond, one needs to get really close to the stone, within 2-3 feet. Hence, you should opt for a diamond with a color grade of G-H or higher to ensure the diamond does not have noticeable yellow hues.
The highest clarity grades are only noticeable from a distance of six to eight inches. Hence, you should aim for an ‘eye-clean’ diamond having no visible imperfections from a normal viewing distance. A diamond with clarity grades of VS1-2 is a good choice for maximum value and cost-effectiveness.
The carat weight of a diamond is a matter of personal preference and budget. Keep in mind that prices can skyrocket at certain points such as 0.50, 0.70, 1.00 ct. Buying just below a “magic size” such as purchasing a 0.95 ct diamond instead of a 1.00 ct diamond, can save money without sacrificing appearance.
Choose diamonds with “None” or “Faint” fluorescence for optimal appearance. Avoid diamonds with medium, strong, or very strong fluorescence as they may give a hazy or oily look. As most of the lab grown diamonds exhibit none fluorescence, you so you will have plenty of options to choose from.
To ensure a trustworthy purchase, always buy a certified diamond. IGI/GIA is considered the gold standard in diamond certification and is recognized worldwide. For maximum peace of mind, opt for an IGI/GIA certified diamond.
